Immigrant / Migrant Students

With the Trump administration’s plans for mass deportation, CLE is leading a campaign to encourage schools to adopt CLE’s “Procedures for Protecting School-Age Children Whose Parents May be Detained by ICE” (“ICE Model Protocol”). The ICE Model Protocol calls for: (1) Schools to establish a non-stigmatizing procedure for parents to identify other adults who may pick up their children from school with minimal risk of disclosing personal information; (2) Schools to inform parents of their right to affirmatively deny permission for a school to disclose “directory information” about their child upon request; and (3) Parents to set up a conditional guardianship, power of attorney, or designate a caregiver to help ensure that a child whose parent is detained is safely picked up from school by the person chosen by the parent, and if necessary, placed in the care of the parent selected-designated caregiver. CLE is also working to identify and address unauthorized student record sharing and assist students and families so that schools timely enroll immigrant / migrant students, hold them to high expectations, and provide them with the education supports needed to learn to the challenging academic standards the state has said all children should learn to.
